Howitt Supports Better Access to Sex Offender Information
Commends Lieutenant Governor for her Efforts to Strengthen Laws

SEEKONK- State Representative candidate Steven Howitt has thrown his support behind the Lieutenant Governor’s call for Level 2 sex offenders to have their information posted on the Internet. Currently, the identities and criminal records of Level 2 sex offenders are only available to the public at local police stations.

Howitt believes that this information needs to be readily available. “Someone needs to stand up for our children, who are among the most vulnerable members of our communities. If these individuals are going to be let back into society, the very least we can do for families in this state is to make them aware of a sexual predator in their neighborhood”, said Howitt. “Unfortunately, these people are likely to re-offend, and we need to give parents every tool at our disposal to help them protect their children. Anything less is unacceptable,” added Howitt.

Howitt also voiced his approval for a new law recently signed by Healey, which extends the statute of limitations for prosecuting child rapists, and mandates that sex offenders are registered with the state before their release from prison. “I applaud the Lieutenant Governor for her efforts to strengthen our laws against these sexual predators. However, I believe we need to continue to do more. As a state representative, I would make sure that this remains a priority,” said Howitt. He also added, “These people have committed unspeakable acts, and should be treated as dangerous criminals. We simply can’t allow these predators to strike again, and we owe it to our families to take any steps necessary to make sure it doesn’t happen. I think harsher penalties and stricter laws are the right way to go, that’s how it works.”

Steven Howitt is a State Representative candidate in the 4th Bristol District. Visit www.StevenHowitt.com for more information or to volunteer.
